What to eat during pregnancy



Pregnancy is a very confusing period in every woman's life; especially when it's her first time. She is always worried about anything she eats. There is always a fear of eating something wrong. To get rid of such fear, read every word of this post carefully.

Every woman wants her fetus to be healthy and safe. She is always busy taking care of it by having good diet, reading good things,  watching and listening to the positive stuff.
She does everything she knows for the wellness of her baby inside.

A mother always wants her baby to be healthy, fit,  intelligent, active and good at everything. To achieve this purpose,  she performs various activities like worshiping god,  reading prayers,  doing yoga,  reading positive thoughts and including nutritious food items in diet.

Health and brain development of a baby depends upon its care taken while in embryo. Whatever you eat during this period will reflect in your baby's health. For that you need proper knowledge of diet during pregnancy.

Some very nutritious foods are mentioned below for the pregnant women.



1)  Coconut Water

Coconut water is very nutritious for the health baby as well as mother. It is very beneficial throughout pregnancy.

Coconut water prevents dehydration keeping you always hydrated. Being hydrated is very essential for a pregnant lady.

The fetus in embryo is floating in 'amniotic fluid' filled in a sac called amniotic sac. This fluid should remain in its appropriate quantity for good health of the fetus.

Coconut water contributes well in case of inadequate amniotic fluid.

It prevents dehydration,  heart burn,  vomiting,  morning sickness,  etc.

A pregnant woman should drink coconut water every morning.

2) Sweet lime Or Oranges

Sweet lime is an English word for 'Mosambi. ' Mosambi as well as oranges are very beneficial and safe during pregnancy.
These fruits are very rich in vitamin C which is important in proper functioning of the body,  growth and development process,  absorption of iron,  etc.  Vitamin C is very beneficial during pregnancy.


These citrus fruits are very juicy which contributes in fluid intake,  prevents dehydration and other pregnancy symptoms like vomiting,  nausea, etc.

When your ultrasonography report shows inadequate amniotic fluid,  you are recommended to increase the intake of fluids. Oranges and sweet lime are very beneficial in increasing the amniotic fluid level.

3) Dry fruits

Dry fruits are very proteinecious and are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, dietary fibres which are beneficial for human healt.

Dry fruits makes very healthy snack for a pregnant woman. A baby growing inside her needs lot of protein and vitamins for its proper development. All these nutrientional needs can be fulfilled with daily intake of dry fruits.

Almonds and walnuts are very good for the development of brain. They contains proteins and vitamins which contributes in proper functioning of the brain cells and prevents ageing of brain cells.

Walnuts are also very good source of vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids which are helpful in brain functioning. Eating walnuts and almonds during pregnancy will be helpful for giving birth to an intellectual child.

Raisins are very good for a pregnant woman as it is rich in dietary fibres. Black resins are very beneficial in heart burn. Have few black resins after a meal to avoid heart burn during pregnancy.

Figs and dates are also good during pregnancy.  They are rich in iron which plays important role in heme synthesis which is essential for haemoglobin production.  Haemoglobin plays important role in carrying oxygen in blood to the body cells. Iron deficiency can cause anaemia in baby as well as mother.

Above mentioned are very healthy and nutritious and safe to eat for the pregnant lady and her fetus.


4) Milk

Milk is rich in proteins, calcium, vitamins like vitamin A and D useful in bone building,  vitamins like thiamine,  riboflavin,  B 12, folate are required for perform various body functions.  Other than vitamins and proteins,  milk contains many minerals and enzymes also which are required for the digestion.



Due to its contents serves as very nutritional food for the pregnant lady. It contributes in growth and development of fetus,  bone building,  etc.

A pregnant woman should always consume boiled cow milk which comes from nearby dairies where the cows are grown and taken care of. Never consume pasteurized milk which lacks the nutrients present in milk. Only the raw,  full cream milk constitutes all good nutrients.

5)  Pure cow ghee

Pure cow ghee is very nutritious for the health of pregnant woman and also her baby. Fats in ghee are beneficial during pregnancy. Fats are essential for the body in limited amount. Cow ghee contains good nutrients beneficial for the baby. Pure cow ghee is known to improve the memory by strengthening the brain cells.
Ghee has a high smoke point which is best for cooking and eating purpose. A pregnant lady can possibly eat food cooked in ghee which is very beneficial for the baby.

6) Fruits

Some fruits are already mentioned above. Besides that fruits like apple, chikoo, pomegranate,  figs, grapes, musk mellon,  water mellon, etc. are healthy to eat during pregnancy.

Always make a habit of eating only one type of fruit at a time in morning. Never take fruits in combination.  Avoid fruit juice as far as possible and make a habit of having a whole fruit which contains good fibers which are filtered in juices.

'An apple a day keeps the doctor away. ' Everyone is aware of this very common saying.  One should also stick to the sentence. It is good to have an apple daily in the morning. But if you want to have different fruits,  then take them the alternate days.  Like if today morning I had an apple or two,  tomorrow I will go for chikoos. This method will involve the variety of fruits to your diet.

Bananas are loved by all and are also good for health, but now-a-days it is really difficult to identify the good bananas. They are mostly ripened with the help of calcium carbide which is very dangerous chemical. This is the reason their is hesitation for eating bananas. You can eat them in a little quantity if you wish.


A pregnant woman should have a balanced diet at proper time. Everyday diet schedule should be made.  She has to include all the beneficial,  nutritious food items to her diet which makes it necessary to fix the time and sequence of various foods. 

She can have a normal balanced diet which is not too spicy or too sweet. The word 'too much' should be avoided. Eat everything you like, but not in excess. Take adequate quantity of any food you wish to have in meals.

Have a fruitful diet

7) Vegetables

Have vegetables rich in fibres.  Consume lots of green leafy vegetables. They contains ample amounts of vitamins,  minerals,  fibres. These are very beneficial during pregnancy and the fibres in them helps to prevent constipation which is very common in pregnant ladies.

You can daily include one leafy vegetable curry in your diet along with other curries.

Salad is a very good option in this period. Having salad in diet makes it easier to consume raw veggies. You can add little curd or lemon to the salads.  Avoid using oils to garnish the salads.

Include tomatoes,  beetroots,  spinach,  carrots to your meals.




A healthy diet is the one which provides all the nutritional benefits. One should concentrate on the health along with taste to have nutritional diet. It is essential to have a healthy diet during pregnancy to give birth to a healthy child. ☺
