Gooseberry or Avla is a fruit with many benefits. It contains ample amount of vitamin C. It is a seasonal fruit and found in large quantities in winter. It is very healthy to consume during winter. It is believed that an Avla contains vitamin C equal to that of three oranges.
Having a diet rich in vitamin C is beneficial for good skin and hair as well as body health.
Avla is the only fruit rich in vitamin C which can be stored for long and consumed daily with negligible loss of vitamin content.
Hair becomes lustrous and strong with regular intake of gooseberry. Hairfall stops and dandruff vanishes.
All skin related problems can be solved by regular consumption of gooseberry leaving it clear and glowing.
Avla is very healthy for the digestive system. It's consumption improves digestion and also prevents constipation keeping you healthy and happy.
Avla has so many health benefits so that it is also known as ' Amrut Avla ' in Marathi.
It is used in many Ayurvedic medicines for cure of diseases. One of those medicines is 'Triphala churna' which is used for constipation.
How can you consume gooseberry regularly?
If you like sour and salty with slightly spicy item in food to eat with rotis, avla pickle is the best. This pickle serves as the best appetizer during meals. It's consumption will stimulate your taste buds resulting in increased appetite.
Pickled avla is the easiest way to store avla for regular consumption. Another way is the avla moramba which is also an another tasty option for sweet lovers. When moramba is dried in sun, you get avla candy which is a very delicious sweet snack you can have anytime.
Another item you can prepare from gooseberry is avla sherbet. It is sweet juice made from avla extract which can be served as a very good fruit drink.
How to make Avla pickle?
The recipe of avla pickle is very easy. In different regions it is made by adding different ingredients which gives different tastes to the pickled avla. In Vidarbha we usually love the spicy, sour and salty tasty of avla pickle.
To make picked avla -
INGREDIENTS -
1) Avla - 250 GM
2) Water - 2 cups
3) Oil - 1/2 cup
4) Cumin powder - 1 tbsp
5) Fennel seeds - 1 1/2 tsp
6) Split mustard seeds - 1 tbsp
7) Fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
8) Coriander powder - 1 1/2 tsp
9) Black pepper powder - 1 tsp
10) Red chilly powder - 1 tbsp
11) Asophoetida - 1 tsp
12) Salt to taste
13) Sugar to taste
METHOD-
To make avla pickle, first of all wash avla, wrap in a cloth and let it dry, and steam it in a pressure cooker. To steam avla, place it in a dry container and close with a lid. Put this container in a pressure cooker filled with water. No water should entre in the container where avla is placed.

After 2 whistles are over, switch off the gas. Let the cooker cool down and cut the avla into slices as shown in the picture below.
Now, heat a pan on gas. Pour oil, add all the seeds mentioned above, add asophoetida. Now close the gas and add all the mentioned powdered spices and quickly add the cut slices of avla. Mix properly and add salt and sugar to taste. Again mix well.

Your pickled avla is ready. Now take a glass jar and fill it with this pickle. Keep the jar in clean and dry place. You can use it from next day.
